"So what type of 'Art' are you doing...exactly?"
It's been an interesting and busy week since I put up my first blog post. I have been super encouraged by the positive feedback and challenged by other's admonishment. People have also been a little confused about what type of "art" I am actually doing.
First, I would like to clarify again why I am doing what I am doing. In our culture today everyone admires the notion of following ones heart and although it has been a childhood dream to do art, it is not my "heart" that is driving me. What I believe I am doing is being obedient to God's calling on my life. I would be fearful if a person said they were just following their heart.
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9
Our hearts can sometimes deceive us and lead us astray. Rather, I seek to follow God's will and calling for my life (please refer to last post on discerning the will of God).
So again, what in the world am I doing? Am I a painter? A filmmaker? A writer? Well, I would have to say yes to all of those questions. Now before you quote the old saying about being a jack of all trades and a master of none, let me first explain to you how I grew up. During my formative years as a young man I was surrounded by some of the most talented people I had ever met. Just about everyone in my kung fu school did multiple forms of art.
Just take the full contact team. You have people like Ed Pratt (DJ/B-boy), Randy Childs (graffiti/fine arts), Linh Thai (filmmaker), John Stewart (fine artist) and Ji Kang (fine arts/entrepreneur). You even have the members of Swag Funk Band who can beat you up and write a song about it. Not to mention other artists like Philippe Prosper (writer/musician/actor), Joseph Nontanovan (writer/dancer/chef) and our Sifu who was the Grandmaster (actor/musician/artist/calligrapher/Chinese herbalist).
To me, being an artist was an inclusive endeavor and has always included various mediums and sources of expression. Everyone tells you to just focus on one thing and be good at that. But that just won't work for me. One art form gives me context and inspiration for another.
So WHAT am I really doing? For the past seven years my brother and business partner Philippe Prosper have been working towards starting a production/brand management company called WONDERuS (website coming soon). Its goal is to create art and entertainment that is artistically innovative and eternally impactful. As you look at music and entertainment nowadays there is a clear agenda. Our goal is to shine light onto the darkness and use the arts as a pedestal to proclaim truth through art that engages, grabs people's attention and that is competitive with the arts out there. In the future we also want to give a voice to groups of disenfranchised people such as orphans and people caught in sex trafficking. Right now we are focusing on music and eventually we will be branching out into film and various other forms of artistic communication.
Personally, I am working on developing my craft as a filmmaker, writer, martial artist, graphic novelist and fine artist. Not to be cliche but I would love to be a part of ushering in a new artistic renaissance for our generation. Over the next couple months I hope to be posting more of my current work as well as blogs that show my process. Hope you'll join me for the ride!
